Amerixan Notion opens February 16
Playground Detroit opened their new gallery in November 2017 and since then, have featured dozens of Detroit artists. The first solo exhibition in the new space—Amerixan Notion by Detroit artist Nic Notion—draws inspiration from the city, including its flag and its changing landscape.
Notion uses mixed media—paintings, photography, and sculpture—throughout the exhibition, and his work is meant to mirror his surroundings. Patrons might notice outlines of buildings, people, or cars in his layered, high-contrast work, which reflects racial and class inequality and questions the American Dream. “The mission behind my artwork is to force people to see beauty in a different way,” says Notion.
An opening reception will be held Friday, February 16 from 6 to 9 p.m. at 2845 Gratiot Avenue. The gallery is open Wednesday-Friday from 12 to 6 p.m., Saturdays 12 to 4 p.m., or by appointment. Amerixan Notion runs through March 24.
Playground Detroit is located just outside the Eastern Market district in the McDougall-Hunt neighborhood. After a successful crowdfunding campaign, Playground Detroit transformed the vacant building into their first permanent location, serving as a creative hub for local artists and a venue to showcase emerging talent.
